As a child, Ali Neuman narrowly escaped being murdered by Inkatha, a militant political party at war with Nelson Mandela's African National Congress. Only he and his mother survived the carnage of those years. But as with many survivors, the psychological scars remain. Today, Ali is chief of the homicide branch of the South African police in Cape Town. One of his staff is Brian Epkeen, a free-wheeling white officer whose family was originally involved in the establishment of apartheid but who works well with Neuman. Together they have to deal with crime that inevitably exists in sprawling areas of un- and under- employed people, crime exacerbated by gangs, both local and from other parts of Africa. Their job gets even more difficult when the corpses of two young women are found. A new evil has been introduced in the city and a new drug has been introduced to its residents, including both murder victims. At the chaotic crossroads where brutality and modernization collide, the echoes of...

A really really great Drama!!!
Policemen Ali Sokhela and Brian Epkeen investigate the brutal murder of a young white woman, apparently provoked by the availability of a new illegal drug and somehow connected to the disappearance of black street children. Zulu is a bloody, disturbing and pretty damn suspenseful thriller drama with 2 terrific performances by Orlando Bloom and Forest Whitaker, the movie follows 2 policemen that try to investigate a bunch of murders one is more of the good cop who goes by the book and the 2nd one is the bad cop who doesn't care at all and doesn't really go by the book. Bloom is the "bad cop" of this situation he doesn't care about the law that much and he doesn't care about a lot of things in general he is also divorced and Whitaker went threw a serious situation when he was young in fact that's a pretty disturbing scene to watch plus he sometimes visits his mother. Now the film is more of a drama but it also packs some great action sequences and one in particular is very beautifully shot with a really great soundtrack playing in the background and it's full of suspense it's actually the ending of the movie with a few words. Zulu is a great film that deserves a higher rating and more fans in general it's not the greatest film of any of the 2 men but it's definitely on their list.
Crime in Post Apartheid South Africa
Zulu is a decent crime thriller with a lot of gore and a good script and very well acted performances from the crew in general ,especiallt from Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom, who finally made a come back after a long time out of the spotlight.
So the story follows two cops in South Africa, one is Ali ,a Zulu dependence cop and the other is Brian ,of Africaans decedent and they are now against a murder of a girl, which seems to be caused by a new ,unknown up to now, drug with grim effects to the user. What I like with this plot is that is focused to the environment of South Africa ,which has just now heal from the mismanagement of the Apartheid and while this era has gone its effects are still felt even now. And the film portraits that quit well and with a respect-full way to our main characters who represent the failures of that system from both sides.
But the film is far from perfect. It is rushed, the plot at times predictable and apart from Whitaker and Bloom all the other people feel a bit two-dimensional, with not enough depth to them. As for the drug itself well it was fine though in the end its use was quit the jumping the shark! However this doesn't justify the loss the film suffered ,which was honesty a big one.
Over all isn't L.A. Confindecial, Dirty Harry or Lethal Weapon , but as far as crime thriller go was a good one ,nothing more.

The harsh reality of PROJECT COAST n post apartheid trauma.
The pace of the movie makes it a thrilling experience from start to finish. The film was very good from the start and continued all the way through at a good pace. Zulu was very well directed somehow the director Jérôme Salle kept the story full of action yet dramatic in a real down to earth way. Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom made quite an impression on me. A movie with well developed characters, telling a gripping story, that leads to a meaningful ending. The movie displays some signs of a low budget but good acting, skillful direction n solid plot covers up the weaknesses. Beautiful images of the coast and the wealthier neighborhoods on one side n poor slums on the opp side r the harsh realities shown here. The characters r very well developed. Whittakers character suffering from psychological problems, including memories from his childhood, (sees his father being tortured n set on fire). I was wondering why Whittakers character touches one naked lady n never indulges in sex. There's a very shocking suspense to it. Sad n depressing at times but good action/drama. The movie was not promoted well. Jus saw recently on a DVD without having any idea bout it. The posters of Whittaker n Orlando gav me hope to pick the DVD.
